Host: State Court Administrative Office - Child Welfare Services

Date: Wednesday, May 10, 2017

Time: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Location: Michigan Hall of Justice - Lansing, MI

Target Audience:
This training is intended for all child welfare professionals including jurists, court staff, prosecutors, attorneys, lawyer guardians ad litem, child protective services and foster care workers, tribes, private agencies, law enforcement, mental health providers, and education professionals.

Training Description:
Child welfare staff are often the first to respond to family crisis and trauma situations, and yet they are not prepared as first responders. This training seeks to prepare you to understand secondary traumatic stress, the conditions that may expose staff to secondary traumatic stress, and allow you the space to assess exposure to workplace conditions that may impact mental health and heart-space. You will be able to identify supports and resources as well as self-assessment tools for reflection. This training will also discuss the importance of appropriately addressing the holistic needs of the self. You will be given an opportunity to learn how to assess self-needs and will be provided resources on how to take care of the self as a member of the child welfare team. A self-care tool-kit will be developed during this workshop and will be individualized for each participant. The self-care tool kit will be able to be used in the workplace, when working mobile, at home, or in the office. This training will utilize exercises, small and large group discussions, and visual displays.
